Kastamonu Sanat Cooperative

Design For Sustainability

The Brief

How do you translate a deep-rooted cultural heritage and artisanal tradition into a contemporary visual language that breathes new life into local production? For the S.S. Kastamonu Sanat Kadın Girişimi Üretim ve İşletme Kooperatifi, which represents the empowerment of women producers as much as it does the preservation of traditional block printing (taş baskı), the challenge was to reflect the poetry of earth, block, and pattern in a design framework that honors history while connecting with modern markets.

At Harmonia, we believe design should resonate with the soul of its community. We approached this project by focusing on authentic storytelling, organic flow, and the tangible craftsmanship of the region. The goal was to make the product ecosystem feel like a living, breathing continuity—much like the heritage it carries.

To elevate local production and empower women artisans through the timeless art of traditional block printing (taş baskı), our consultancy focused not only on design innovation but also on sustainable craftsmanship. We approached the Kastamonu Sanat Kadın Kooperatifi project by developing waste-minimizing packaging solutions and empowering the cooperative's members to independently produce their own packaging using woodblock printing techniques. Through comprehensive field research, collaborative workshops, and the creation of at least three contemporary print designs with digital vector files, we crafted a sustainable ecosystem that honors cultural heritage while ensuring long-term self-sufficiency.
