The Book Design: Challenge
Geleneksel Yapı Teknikleri (Traditional Building Techniques) is the debut book written by Melih Aşanlı, co-founder of our studio, Harmonia. We undertook the complete book design and visual layout for this project. The book serves as a comprehensive, technically dense manual, providing all the necessary foundational knowledge for an individual to construct an ecological building entirely on their own from the ground up.
Given the heavy technical nature of the content, our primary design objective was to create a highly accessible and navigational reference book. We knew this would be a manual readers would return to repeatedly long after their first read, so we developed a layout that makes searching for specific information effortless.
To prevent visual fatigue, we opted for a clean, spacious aesthetic with plenty of white space, prioritizing readability. All the structural techniques detailed in the text were paired with bespoke, hand-drawn illustrations created directly by the author. To provide visual breathing room, we also incorporated minimal illustrations between the chapters. Furthermore, the book's highly visual language is supported by an archive of completely original photography, shot and curated entirely in-house by our studio. The final product is a beautifully balanced, practical guide that merges deep technical instruction with an elegant, easy-to-digest visual style.
