Ecological Design Theory

Design Thinking + Visualizing Ecological Theory

The Brief

Ecological design is not a mechanical process of dividing the world into parts and managing it through sheer expertise; it is a holistic concern for life. Authored by Melih Aşanlı, co-founder of Harmonia, Ecological Design Theory (Volume 1: Humanity's Journey) presents a radical alternative to modern design paradigms that isolate humans from life and other living beings. Stemming from the reality that "any design made must be made for the world," the book outlines a set of principles aimed at comprehending the true nature of water, earth, stone, and wood.

A Simple, Striking Design Language Allowing Time for Reflection
The visual translation of this profound, nature-harmonious philosophy was undertaken by Harmonia's other co-founder, Kübra Köprülüoğlu Aşanlı. Throughout the book's design process, the text’s vision of "existing in harmony with nature rather than dominating it" was reflected on the pages with an aesthetic and conscious rhythm. By remaining faithful to the nature of the material and the subject, a simple yet striking visual style was adopted.

The design centers on an approach that respects the reader's perception and makes room for silence. To ensure that the dense, philosophical sections requiring deep contemplation are fully grasped by the reader, wide empty spaces were deliberately left on the pages. These negative spaces in the page architecture serve as mental time granted to the reader to digest the concepts.

The typographic structure was planned with a simplicity that makes the reading experience as fluid and effortless as possible. However, key thoughts and philosophical emphases within the text were designed almost like independent posters, leaving a visual imprint in the reader's mind and serving to enhance retention.

The original illustrations placed at chapter transitions and interspersed throughout the text not only visually reinforce the theoretical subjects conveyed in the book but also create organic, aesthetic spaces where the reader can take a breath and rest during this profound reading journey. Ecological Design Theory goes beyond a mere collaboration between author and designer; it stands out as a multi-layered work that reflects the spirit of the studio, seamlessly bringing together the ecological sensitivities, production practices, and design philosophy that form the foundation of Harmonia.
